1/31/2024 0 Comments Camping at assateague![]() ![]() One thing to be mindful of is that at certain times of year, especially when the air is still, are the GIGANTIC biting horse flies that come out. They have food and beer and basic supplies if you run out or forget anything. Not too far across the bridge on the mainland, just a bit north, is a pretty decent general store. ![]() A permit is required to go off road that you can buy at the campground office. no clue whether or not that's still functional after Sandy came through. From what I remember there is an available air line right at the trail head so you can pump back up if you air down your tires. There's also an area south of the camp ground that's designated for beach driving with 4wd vehicles. they do get into things and can be damn stubborn: Two years ago I was delayed from leaving by nearly an hour and a half when one of them was learning against the driver's door of my car and wouldn't move. Being the furthest away gives you a lot more privacy and freedom, it's great!ĭefinitely be sure to have a way to completely secure your food and such from the horses. It's a bit of a walk away from the lot so be ready to carry your stuff, but it's the best spot in my opinion for that very reason. I guess it's up to you whether you want to risk breaking the rules, though.Įvery year I reserve site 104 all the way down at the south end of the of the camp ground. I've since camped there and brought alcohol with me I haven't been as loud/obvious, but I still have never been approached by rangers or anything. In response to the people saying rangers sneak around at night, the first time I camped there I was one of about 15 very loud and very drunk teenagers, and we didn't get in trouble. A friend and I tried to do that, spooked them, and were literally (literally literally, not hyperbole literally) almost trampled. Don't try to go up close to them, even to take pictures. They are not friendly petting zoo ponies and they can seriously hurt you (when you go to check in to the park they'll be a big poster with pictures of horse bites!). Keep your food in a big sealed container or bring the cooler into your tent at night, because the horses do root around. Make sure you bring umbrellas or like a gazebo or something for the day (no natural sources of shade on the beach) and blankets/sweatpants for night (it's surprisingly cold at night). Try to get a site on/as close as possible to the actual beach.
